In true Green Giant style, Color War 2010 began with a break to put down in the history books. The break took place at the end of the evening program- a Lord of the Rings themed Counselor Hunt. As campers and staff gathered to see which staff member had the “ring” they had been searching for it was announced that the true ring bearer was to arrive at any moment. Then the lights went out, the Color War song was blasted, and Karl road onto the assembly court on horse back followed by a parade of Green Giants from all directions with torches. As you can imagine, everyone began putting on their colors cheering with excitement that Color War 2010 had begun.

All the pirates and scalawags gathered at Port Royal on Friday as the ship landed for an evening full of games, food, and fun. Campers trekked through the side door of the gym to be greeted by all of their favorite mates and entered into a shipwrecked paradise. There was all the yummy food you could imagine with booths serving pirate punch, mini corndogs and hushpuppies, fried Oreos, and much more, including one titled, “Float the Boat” for root beer floats. If your hands weren’t full of food then you could participates in activities such as sword fighting (with noodles), or finding a hidden treasure in a sand box. The main treasure of the night had to be worked for, as the clue at dinner led many campers searching for the key to the chest. But, in order to get the next clue, they had to identify the person with the correct key as Calypso, which Cabin 9 did. The clue from Calypso led Cabin 9 to find the treasure chest hidden behind Gus’s to score 200 Highlander Bucks. Other popular activities for the evening were hair wraps, the dunking tank, and jail. Rebecca Silverman from Cabin 11 said, “My favorite booth was the dunking booth, even though I didn’t participate, it was still fun to see Cabin 34 boys fall into the water. I also liked how everyone was dressed up, especially the ones who looked scary with dark eye makeup on.” Cabin 11 ran “Pin the Patch on the Pirate” and said it was one of the best evening programs of the summer. Port Royal was a huge success and all the hard work putting it together paid off!

Cold but thrilling, the Nantahala River is a very adventurous and challenging trip. Getting used to the water temperature is almost impossible because the water is 52 degrees, but you have Preston and Tyler doing one good thing: steering your raft so you don’t flip, The last fall is very mind blowing, not only do you have to paddle while you go through the class three rapid, you have to hold on for your life. But, in the end, if you’re cabin is rafting, GET PUMPED!

My Cabin 21 along with Cabin 20 went to Lake Keowee in South Carolina. We knee boarded and wake boarded. We also climbed the waterfall, and swam and swam and swam. After, we went back for dinner we had pizza. It was so good. Soon, we cooked s’mores and played Mafia. We sang and talked, too. Then, we went to the bungalows and talked and laughed. When we woke up we ate and played Mafia again. It was so fun!

Waking up at eight a.m. sharp to “Defying Gravity” was just the beginning of the first official day at Camp Highlander. Archery was one of our activities for the day. While I was struggling to shoot a bulls eye, my goofy counselor offered, “Whoever jumps in the mud pit doesn’t have to do tables for a week.” Everybody ignored the fact that she even said anything, so then Abby offered an even better option by adding, “Fine, no tables for the whole session.” With excitement in my voice, I said, “I’ll do it!” I walked over to the mud pit and all I saw was mulch and some water. This definitely wasn’t mud. If I was going to jump in a mud pit, it was going to be very muddy. A girl in my cabin suggested the BIG mud pit. I thought, “Hey, why not? I’m at camp, it’s time for some adventure!” With Abby and others doubting my ability to do it, we headed down to the mud pit. Once we arrived I quickly kicked off my shoes and took a plunge. All my cabin mates watched me in disgust as I rolled around in the mud. All of a sudden, my cabin chanted, “Stick your head in, stick your head in!” I did as I was told and stuck my head in the mud and flipped it back. Overall, I got many things accomplished: I had so much fun, no tables EVER, and I got a Coke from Ice?first day of camp, TOTAL SUCCESS!

Camp Highlander is so excited to announce that our overnight program has expanded from Pisgah National Forest to now also include trips to the Smoky Mountains. This session our two oldest girls cabins traveled to the Smokies for a two day overnight/hiking trip and had an amazing time.
