The rain can't get us down!

Monday, August 23rd, 2010 | 0 Comments

The First Baptist Church of Northern Spartanburg visited us this weekend for their first visit to Camp Highlander. 150 students joined us at camp for their weekend retreat, “The Launch,” and stayed busy enjoying camp activities and workshops and speakers from Spartanburg.

The group arrived late on Friday night and quickly moved into their cabins to get some rest. On Saturday morning the students enjoyed the wet willy and blob at the lake, swimming at the pool, the zip wire, climbing wall, disc golf, and volleyball. The rain came in the afternoon but we still had fun at the pool and lake. In the evening the group listened to speakers and the church band before heading to campfire for s’mores! We had a delicious breakfast on Sunday morning and said goodbye to The First Baptist youth group after their final church service.

We hope the First Baptist Church of Northern Spartanburg enjoyed their first visit to Camp Highlander and was able to see what our mountain home has to offer, even in the rain!

Rookie Camp 2010 Begins!

Rookie campers arrive
There is always one special week every summer that Camp Highlander staff look forward to the most…Rookie Camp! And this year’s opening day did not let us down one bit.

As campers arrived they took the “Rookie Camp Express” to the Rec Hall where they were greeted by their counselors and had free time playing games like UNO, baggo, ping pong and foozball. We ate lunch, our first meal together as cabins, then took a short rest hour before starting a busy afternoon which included unpacking, time in the pool, a camp tour and cabin pictures. But the highlight of the afternoon was definitely the hours spent in the amazing inflatables donated by the Orr family. Campers jumped, dived, raced and slide around on the huge obstacle courses stopping only to enjoy a cold drink before racing to their next challenge.

After dinner there was a very intense staff vs. camper bombardment game, which the campers reigned supreme (not to worry, the staff are sure to win the kickball game tomorrow). Then we finished up the evening with a campfire, music and s’mores before heading off to bed and a good night’s sleep.
